Silver on the Tree
Here's your Silver on the Tree discussion post, (mostly) on time!

It's a fantastic book, and it ties everything together, so I can't wait to get started on the reread!

Spoilers may be in comments.

The Grey King
You guys, I totally screwed up. For some reason, my brain thought that we were starting The Grey King this week instead of last week. Can you forgive me? Can we still talk about it? Because I just started rereading it, and it is seriously awesome, and I want to talk about it with you.

So, here’s your The Grey King general post. Get talking!

Anyone need books?
Wow, crickets. I swear, I’m going to finish Greenwitch really soon and then talk about its awesomeness. In the meantime, does anyone else need books? I’ve got two Dark Is Risings, two Greenwitchs (I know, a little late, but if you don’t already own them and want to…) one Grey King, and Two Silver on the Trees.

First come, first served!

Is the Light really kind of dim? (Greenwitch post, spoilers)
Caveat: I still love these books. I am deliberately trying to read them this time through with more of a skeptic's eye, thinking critically about them rather than just accepting them as Really Good.

The WHAT is Rising?
So, I just finished the first (or second, but for our purposes first) book on my TWO HOUR BUSRIDE this morning... which was supposed to take one hour... but whatever. Anyway.

Overall? I enjoyed it. To be honest, I didn't fall as deeply in love with it as I thought I might, but I really think that that may have a lot to do with the fact that I waited till I was 25 to read them. And also a lot to do with how I spend most of my workday, which is reading and picking apart fantasy novels. (Best job ever. Seriously.)

Anyway... I loved the characters. I loved all the EVENTS! that happened. I loved Cooper's prose. But there was something that seemed... off. And I think I know what it was -- in fact, I don't think I was the only one who mentioned it in the last discussion post.

So I'm starting a brand-spankin'-NEW discussion post, because I want to know what you guys think....

What is this Dark business all about, anyway?Collapse )

Extra book
Somehow in my ordering frenzy, I managed to end up with two copies of The Grey King and none of Greenwitch. I'll just go buy the latter but if anyone needs a former, please let me know and I'll send you a copy. Email to the address in my profile should get through.

Edit: Spoken for! :)

Let the games begin!
Hi, you guys. Welcome to the TDIR Readathon!

Here's how it's going to work. I'll post a central post for each book at the start of the reading period for that book. There will definitly be spoilers for that book and the preceding books only in that post. If you'd like to bring something else up in another post, go for it!

However, if you're posting about The Dark Is Rising during the The Dark Is Rising reading weeks, please keep all spoilers underneath a cut (and indicate that they are spoilers.) If you want to specify that your post contains spoilers up until Chapter X, that would be really helpful. Once we've moved into Over Sea, Under Stone territory, The Dark Is Rising spoilers are fair game.

To clarify: once the two week reading period for a particular book is complete, it will be safe to assume that everyone here has read that book, so it will be open range for spoilers for that book and all preceding books.

Please try and make any new posts discussion oriented, so we can keep the booktalk going.

Okay, I think that's it with rules and regulations. Does that all make sense? Sound good? If anything is unclear, just ask!

Welcome to The Dark Is Rising Readathon! We will be starting on October 7, with The Dark Is Rising.

Now, I know some of you will say, “But penmage! Over Sea, Under Stone is the first book in the sequence! Everyone knows that, and aren’t you the biggest purist of them all when it comes to reading books in the proper order?”

And then I will respond to you that while OSUS is indeed the official first book, it is in fact the weakest book in the sequence, and when people read it first, it usually turns them off to the sequence, which is really a shame. Fortunately for us, OSUS introduces one set of characters and TDIR introduces a different set of characters, and it really doesn’t matter you read first—except that OSUS can be kind of dull, and TDIR is brilliant and wonderful.

So we’ll be reading The Dark Is Rising first, and that’s just the way it is.
